REAL ESTATE LITIGATION

We handle active litigation in court at all levels up to the Supreme Court.

What the team does

Our Real Estate Litigation team is one of the biggest in the country. Led by Martin Thomas, lawyers and support staff work across the London and Birmingham offices as one team, covering specialist areas such as:

  • commercial and residential landlord and tenant relationships
  • large-scale developments
  • rights to light
  • rights of access
  • the Telecommunications Code
  • agricultural law

Advisory work forms a key part of our caseload. But we also handle active litigation in court at all levels up to the Supreme Court, as well as mediation and arbitration. For our people, there’s opportunity for advocacy, and to train for higher rights of audience.

Our size means there's always someone around to speak to. Lawyers often travel between the offices to work, and we always welcome them (as long as they come bearing cake).

What it's like to work with us

Litigation is fast-paced work. It also requires an in-depth knowledge of property law, so it's fair to say our lawyers are busy. But we always help them be the best they can be.

Our junior lawyers work closely with partners, to gain an insight into different specialisms and more complex litigation. We also offer internal talks and training throughout the year. Training is ongoing – all lawyers are members of the Property Litigation Association and we expect everyone to attend seminars and contribute to legal updates. While we’ll encourage you to develop certain specialisms to match market need, we make sure you’re free to choose your own objectives and shape your career.

We’re always thinking of ways to improve the way we work. For example, agile working is now firm-wide, which means our lawyers can decide how and where they work.

Being a welcoming and good-humoured group, we often arrange internal events such as our team Crystal Maze challenge (it looked easier on television).; We’re always keen to get stuck into firm-wide and client events, such as the JLL relay triathlon and coast-to-coast challenge. However, because we bake better than we run, our "Bake Off" competitions are always popular.

We also believe pro bono work is important: the time goes towards chargeable hours and bonus considerations. We’ve advised the Big Issue, Oxfam and WWF, as well as local charities. But you can bring your own pro bono projects on board if you have an interest in a particular area.
